Sports cage on Centrumplan roof

September 2011 – Centrumplan is being built alongside the Duinpark in Den Helder. It is a multifunctional complex accommodating supermarkets, local facilities and a community school. The schoolyard is located on different levels. The schoolyard for the older classes of "De Trimaran" is on the roof and it has a fenced-off sports field where the children can play basketball and football. Verzinkerij Heerhugowaard hot-dip galvanised the sports cage and the goals before Poedercoating Heerhugowaard applied a powder coating.

In May 2011, Queen Beatrix visited the Duinpark area in what used to be the notorious Falga estate in Den Helder. The area was once dominated by concrete high-rise flats, neglect and crime. After thirteen years of demolition, re-development and construction, the area has made a quantum leap as a place to live. More than 400 high-rise homes have been demolished, to be replaced by 168 new homes, a care complex and a centre with a range of local facilities in a park-like setting.

The unique design of Centrumplan means that the complex is at one with the dune landscape. The inclined green roof merges with the Duinpark behind the building and the community school complex is made up of different layers. The schoolyard for the upper classes of "De Trimaran" is on the roof of the building where the younger classes have their lessons, extending to the roof of the shops in the adjoining shopping street. This raised yard includes a fenced-off sports field with an open-air grandstand where students can play basketball for football during the break. There is a sports cage to stop the balls flying off the roof. ABC Hekwerk from Waarland produced and assembled the sports cage and the goals with Joosten Staalbouw from Heerhugowaard. These items were treated using the Duplex Route – hot-dip galvanisation at Verzinkerij Heerhugowaard and powder coating at Poedercoating Heerhugowaard – providing enduring protection for the sports cage and goals against sunlight, rain and sea winds so that the children can play safely here for many years into the future.
